Type II photosensitized oxidation in senescent microalgal cells at different latitudes: Does low under-ice irradiance in polar regions enhance efficiency?

Comparison of Type II photosensitized oxidation lipids (the photodynamic effect) and photodegradation chlorophyll (sensitizer photobleaching) in samples particulate matter collected previously from locations representing a diverse range latitudes reveals an enhancement the photooxidation at expense polar regions. The efficiency effect appears to be particularly high sinking particles under sea ice is attributed rapid settling highly aggregated sympagic algae depths low light transmission favouring photobleaching sensitizer. Paradoxically, observed temperate equatorial regions associated with solar irradiances these senescent phytoplankton seems thus strongly dependent intensity irradiance.
